Biology 311 - Genetics
This is a primarily lecture based course that prepares students for upper division courses in Biology, is required for ALL Biology majors, and focuses on key aspects of genetics and molecular biology.
(I teach it in Fall and Summer)
Biology 461 - Eukaryotic Molecular Biology Laboratory
This is a hands on laboratory course which includes RNA sequence analysis, Drosophila genome annotation and yeast genetics. The course focuses on reading and critically analyzing primary peer reviewed literature through student run journal clubs, clear writing of scientific papers, design and analysis of experiments which result in large data sets, and a design of independent and group experiments. Good for any student interested in graduate school, medical school, or a job in biotechnology/industry. (Fall only)
Collaboration and assistance for BIO 461 comes from: UCSF, the Genomics Education Partnership, UC Santa Cruz, CSU San Marcos Biotechnology program, UC Davis, and the Joint Genome Institute.
Biology 414 - Advanced Cell Biology
This course focuses on key experimental procedures that advanced our knowledge in cell biological processes. Students learn how to use experiments to answer research questions in cell biology. The course focuses on the structure and function of cells, cell signaling, and the cell cycle, and intercalates recent peer reviewed literature with a central cell biology text and lectures. (Spring only)
Biology 491 - Research Capstone
To take this course you must have already completed an independent research project with an approved advisor. In BIO 491 we delve into the depths of your project to ensure an understanding of the basic biology, and research question and methods. Students develop a poster and /or an oral presentation to present at the capstone festival. Deliverables include: annotated bibliography, poster, powerpoint, funding paragraph, and literature review.
Biology 492 - Biology seminar series
Some semesters I also coordinate the Biology Seminar series which can be taken as a 1 unit upper division course for junior and senior level students. This course includes biweekly journal clubs and mandatory attendance and participation in the Biology Seminar Series. The course can be repeated up to three times for credit. (see link to Biology seminar series on this site).
Biology 397/497- Independent Research
Students are welcome to take a 1 unit course with me (up to three times) which fulfills upper division credit for conducting a research project in my lab. Contact me for additional information.
